Robert Silverberg tops the hardcover list as editor and also appears here as writer, while David Drake has series titles on both the hardcover and paperback lists. New runner-up: Into the Fire by Dennis L. McKiernan (Roc). There were 94 nominees, up from last month's 89.

Terry Goodkind has a huge lead for paperbacks; new runner-up: Article 23 by William R. Forstchen (Del Rey). We had 121 nominees, the same as last month.

For the trade paperbacks, the Bester/Zelazny still leads, and perennial favorite Mists of Avalon returns yet again. New runner-up: Lord of the Fantastic: Stories in Honor of Roger Zelazny, edited by Martin H. Greenberg (Avon Eos). Nominees: 61, to last month's 59.

For media tie-ins, a Trek book leads, with the other two books in the Q Continuum also appearing. New runner-up: Star Wars: Specter of the Past by Timothy Zahn (Bantam Spectra). There were 44 nominees, up from 39.

In gaming-related books,another new Battletech book is on top.We had 20 nominees, to 26 last month.
