Robert Jordan kept the lead in hardcovers, and Terry Pratchett stayed on with a UK import. New runner-up: Fortress of Owls by C.J. Cherryh (HarperPrism). There were 80 nominees, to last month's103.

McCaffrey and Willis dominated the paperbacks, well ahead of the rest. New runner-up: The First Casualty by Mike Moscoe (Ace). Nominees: 97, down from 117.

For the peak of the holiday season, The Mists of Avalon tops the trade paperbacks! There was no new runner-up. Nominees: 61, to last month's 63.

Jeter's "Star Wars" title held on at #1, on the media-related list, still with a strong lead. New runner up: Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Watcher's Guide by Golden & Holder (Pocket). We had 41 nominees, up from 39.

There were no new runners-up for gaming. Nominees: 20, down from 27.
