In hardcovers, George R.R. Martin took first place with a big lead. New runner-up: The Crook Factory by Dan Simmons (Avon). There were 80 nominees, to last month’s 83.

Terry Pratchett tops the paperbacks, as well as having a ‘‘Discworld’’ book on the hardcover list.The new runner-up is Vigilant by James Alan Garner (Avon Eos). Nominees: 108, up from 100.

Two new entries finally head the trade paperbacks, though Marion Zimmer Bradley still has two ‘‘Avalon’’ books here. The new runner-up is The Art of Arrow Cutting by Stephen Dedman (Tor). We had 67 nominees, the same as last month.

We had a tie for #5 in the media-related books. New runner up: Babylon 5: Deadly Relations: Bester Ascendent by J. Gregory Keyes (Del Rey). We had 53 nominees, up from 47.

The latest ‘‘Battletech’’ heads gaming by a good margin. Nominees: 23, up from 14.
