Best of 1999: San Francisco Chronicle

The San Francisco Chronicle's choices for the best science fiction books of the year (selected by SF reviewer Michael Berry) are:

  • Peter Straub, Mr. X (Random House)
  • Frank M. Robinson, Waiting (Forge)
  • Al Sarrantonio, ed., 999: New Stories of Horror and Suspense (Avon)
  • Also, Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon is named on the best in fiction list, with Marina Warner's No Go the Bogeyman: Scaring, Lulling and Making Mock included among the best in nonfiction, and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban among the year's best children's fiction books.

    The paper also ran a reader poll for the Best in the West Top 100 Fiction and Nonfiction, of works about, or by authors from, the western US. Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness is 21st on the fiction list; George Stewart's Earth Abides 26th; Philip K. Dick's The Man in the High Castle 57th; Frank Herbert's Dune 94th. Books by Theodora Kroeber, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Ambrose Bierce make the nonfiction list.
