Best of 1999: Library Journal

Library Journal's selection of the Best Books of 1999 includes the following SF titles, chosen by Jackie Cassada:

  • Greg Bear, Darwin's Radio (Del Rey)
  • Orson Scott Card, Ender's Shadow (Tor)
  • Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson, Dune: House Atreides (Bantam Spectra)
  • Judith Merkle Riley, The Master of All Desires (Viking)
  • Neal Stephenson, Cryptonomicon (Avon)
The editors note that 1999 was an especially good year for books; their full list totals 55 titles (not including mystery, SF, and Romance), compared to averages of 30 or 35 titles in past years.

Among the 55 general fiction and nonfiction titles are several on scientific themes: Antonio R. Damasio's The Feeling of What Happens: Body and Emotion in the Making of Consciousness (Harcourt); Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory (Norton); Sarah Blaffer Hrdy's Mother Nature: A History of Mothers, Infants, and Natural Selection (Pantheon); Dava Sobel's Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love (Walker); and Jonathan Weiner's Time, Love, Memory: A Great Biologist and His Quest for the Origins of Behavior (Knopf).
