American Gods utterly dominated hardcovers for the second month in a row. The Lord of the Rings makes its first appearance in this category. Peter David's Sir Apropos of Nothing (Pocket) was the new runner-up. We had 82 nominees, one less than last month.

Calculating God had a solid lead in the paperback category. New runner-up: The Depths of Time by Roger MacBride Allen (Bantam Spectra). Nominees: 102, down from 106.

The Mists of Avalon led trade paperbacks for the fifth month straight, with twice the points as the number two title. War For the Oaks by Emma Bull (Tor) was the new runner-up. Nominees: 54, down from 69.

Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Balance Point was the strong favorite in the media-related category. Nominees: 27, down from 34.

Forgotten Realms: Servant of the Shard headed gaming-related titles with three times the points as the next title. Nominees: 28, down from 29.
