SFFH on General Lists
6 October 2002

Stephen King's From a Buick 8 (Scribner) debuts strongly on 6 US lists this week (it appeared on UK lists a month ago), ranking #1 on four of them.

And Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson's Dune: The Butlerian Jihad (Tor) continues to perform very strongly, debuting on four more lists this week, as high as #3 at Amazon. Even Washington Post's lists, which haven't included a genre title in months, makes room for Herbert/Anderson at #9 among hardcover fiction.

And LA Times's lists, typically almost as bereft of genre titles as WP, has three this week: Herbert/Anderson at #11, King at #13, and Chabon's Summerland (perhaps because LAT doesn't have a regular children's list to relegate it to) debuting at #15.

After breaking its 115-week streak on NYT's children's chapter book list last week, the hardcover of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire returns to the list this week at #8.

Among paperbacks, Laurell K. Hamilton's Narcissus in Chains debuts on 2 lists this week, and a mass-market set of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy ranks #16 at Amazon.

Neil Gaiman's Coraline debuts, rather belatedly, on Amazon's hardcover fiction list this week; but then Amazon's lists are often suspect in some way or another. This week, for instance, Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Lullaby is ranked on the nonfiction list, while Stephen King appears on the hardcover fiction list at #18--but with Everything's Eventual, which dropped off other lists two months ago. Did they mean From a Buick 8?

This cell color indicates rankings on children's bestsellers lists [Italics and brackets indicate stale data -- rankings from one or more weeks before -- and do not contribute to the cumulative weeks on any list totals]

Key:
The table shows the current rank of each book and the change since last week, where:
   =    same as last week
   + or - with number:    difference since last week
   +    back on list
   ++    new on list
   x    no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The Bookseller, Publishers Weekly, BookSense, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
