SFFH on General Lists
16 February 2003

William Gibson's Pattern Recognition (Putnam) debuts on 5 lists this week, ranking #1 on the San Francisco list, #4 at New York Times. It still ranks on Amazon's not-yet-published list (despite being an online bookseller, Amazon's category bestseller lists seem to run a couple weeks behind everyone else's).

Robert Jordan's Crossroads of Twilight (Tor) drops off the San Francisco list it placed on just once, but still ranks highly on most lists.

Debuting this week is a Star Wars novel by Sean Williams and Shane Dix, The New Jedi Order: Force Heretic I: Remnant (Del Rey), ranking #10 on NYT's paperback fiction list, #5 on PW's, and #11 on the overall USA Today list. Also debuting, on the Amazon list, are Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and Nancy Farmer's Newbury honor book The House of the Scorpion.

Notable is the US edition of Robin Hobb's Golden Fool (Bantam Spectra), which has ranked among Amazon's top 25 fiction hardcovers for 5 weeks now, though it hasn't appeared on any other list.

This cell color indicates rankings on children's bestsellers lists This cell color indicates rankings on pre-publication or 'not yet published' lists [Italics and brackets, and/or this cell color, indicate stale data -- rankings from one or more weeks before -- and do not contribute to the cumulative weeks on any list totals]

Key:
The table shows the current rank of each book and the change since last week, where:
   =    same as last week
   + or - with number:    difference since last week
   +    back on list
   ++    new on list
   x    no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)

All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats, and BookScan, which combines hardcovers and paperbacks within lists for fiction, nonfiction, and children's. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
