Notable new SF, Fantasy, and Horror books seen, 25 March - 3 April

(Vintage 1-4000-3339-x, $13.95, 479pp, tpb, March 2003, cover illustration H.J. Ward)

Original anthology of 20 stories, by Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Michael Crichton, Michael Moorcock, Elmore Leonard, Harlan Ellison, Glen David Gold, Sherman Alexie, Karen Joy Fowler, and others. Like last year's "Fabulist" issue of Conjunctions, this is a special guest-edited edition of a nominally literary magazine; Chabon's goal is to explore varieties of short fiction other than "the contemporary, quotidian, plotless, moment-of-truth revelatory story" that characterizes approved literary writing. The book is being widely reviewed, with mixed reactions. Amazon has the Publishers Weekly review. Gary K. Wolfe reviews it in the forthcoming May issue of Locus Magazine.

Opening lines:
Let me tell you why I wished to buy a meerkat at Quin's Shanghai Circus. Let me tell you about the city: The city is sharp, the city is a cliché performed with cardboard and painted sparkly colors to disguise the empty center—the hole.
Opening lines:
Inspiration is where you find it. You can't force it, and you can't predict when and where it will come. I had nothing to do with the inspiration that made our great adventure possible. But the inspiration that made it practical came to me while I walking with my friend Dak through a railroad freight yard in my hometown of Daytona.
