Larry Niven's Ringworld's Children easily rose above the next closest hardcovers, which were in tight competition with each other. New runner-up: Dead Lines by Greg Bear (Ballantine). We had 59 nominees, down from 64 last month.

Naked Empire dominated paperbacks, with Darwin's Children trailing behind. New runner-up: Zandru's Forge, Marion Zimmer Bradley & Deborah J. Ross (DAW). Nominees: 69, down from 85.

Pattern Recognition continued its first place run in the trade paperback category for a fifth month. New runner-up: Memory by Linda Nagata (Tor). Nominees: 54, up slightly from 51.

Steven Barnesís Star Wars: The Cestus Deception debuted strongly in the media-related category, with The Chronicles of Riddick close behind. Nominees: 27, down from 33.

Forgotten Realms: The Lone Drow is back on the gaming-related list with a solid lead. Nominees: 21, down from 30.
