SFFH on General Lists

Susanna Clarke's much-anticipated Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Bloomsbury) debuts at #5 on San Francisco Chronicle's list this week, though nowhere else aside from Amazon; despite its official September 8th publication date, copies of the book have shown up in stores (e.g. Barnes & Noble) since before Sept. 1st. Several other titles debut here and there, some of them in advance of publication: Iain Banks's The Algebraist on Amazon UK; Brian Jacques' next Redwall novel on Amazon; Tamora Pierce's next YA novel, in Australia; Jonathan Stroud's next YA novel, on 2 US lists; and in paperback, Kelley Armstrong's Industrial Magic on Amazon UK. All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats, and BookScan, which combines hardcovers and paperbacks within lists for fiction, nonfiction, and children's. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
