All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

Both mass market and trade paperback editions of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend -- actually omnibus editions of the novel plus several stories, published by Tor -- rise on some lists this week and debut on others. It ranks as high as #4 on lists at New York Times and Publishers Weekly. Terry Goodkind's Confessor is still the overall highest ranking genre hardcover this week, placing #5 on the NYT and PW lists. For the fourth week in a row, Michael Chabon's Gentlemen of the Road (Del Rey) ranks #1 on the fiction hardcover list of hometown paper San Francisco Chronicle -- though it ranks no better than #30 on any other list.
