class mail is not usually forwarded. It is either returned
or destroyed. We subtract one issue from your subscription
for each returned copy. We keep expired
addresses on file for one year, so tell us if your

It was a good convention; any convention
you win a Hugo is a good convention
— even Hugo number eleven. As
usual, I got a bit flustered while
accepting and completely forgot the
names of those I wanted to thank most
for their help: Faren, Carolyn, and —
since it was for 1985 — the sorely
missed Donna (we’re still looking for a
replacement), Dawn, Bill Contento who
rescues us every time we have a computer
problem, our loyal reviewers,
columnists, and collators, those who
send material, our readers, and anybody
else who wants to be thanked.
JUDY-LYNN DEL REY
Lester del Rey was right to refuse
the Best Editor Hugo for his late wife,
Judy-Lynn del Rey. His point that she
would not have won or even been nominated
if she hadn’t been fatally
stricken was true. I also think it was
right for her to be on the ballot and
to win. She deserved a Hugo even
though the votes she got had nothing to
do with editing. They were a sign of
love and admiration, more important to
the voters than to the recipient. Both
the award and the refusal are important
and belong as part of our history.
NORWESCON TROUBLES
The hotel problems currently faced by
Norwescon (see last issue) and, to a
lesser extent, Boskone (they’ve lost
their hotel/date for 1988) are not
easily solvable. Both conventions have
been too successful in attracting people.
I attended and enjoyed both, but
was appalled by the general change in
character. The conventions are rowdier,
noisier, and more physically
destructive than ever before. I don’t
think it’s entirely the fault of the
fans. I saw many badgeless groups
wandering the halls and invading the
parties. Because they’re held at the
same time and place every year and
because they can furnish free parties,
movies, games, etc., the conventions
have become home to a large local group
with only a casual attachment to fandom.
I think (or maybe hope) this is
the group causing fire alarms, physical
destructiveness, etc. If not, maybe
the hotels are right in not wanting to
rebook large sf conventions, and maybe
we should rethink how they’re run and
whether they should be held at all.

We’re supposed to have a replacement
number for our second phone by the time

of (415) 339-3182. Our main number
(415) 339-9196 remains the same.
LOCUS DISCIPLE
Kay Riffle, a San Diego student
interested in publishing, spent a week
following me around learning about
Locus, and helping with odd jobs. It
was fun trying to show what we do to an
outsider, and I hope she enjoyed it.
We certainly enjoyed having her here.
ALMOST CORRECTIONS
K.W. Jeter complained about us calling
his new trilogy “cyberpunk.” That
was the publisher’s designation, not
his.
The letter we ran last month from
Somtow Sucharitkul, Sharon Webb, and
Esther Friesner was part of a settlement
when they left the Adele Leone
Agency. Now you know as much as we do.
Jim Baen changed the name of his book
club to the Baen Survey Group, limited
the membership to 250-500, and cut the
discount to 35%. Some of the booksellers
are still irate.
REAL CORRECTIONS
The Audio Saga tapes are not read by
the authors. They’re dramatized by
multiple actors, with sound effects and
original music.
Those of you who looked for the convention
hotel in our cover photo last
time were disappointed. The convention
bureau labeled it as the Mariott Marquis,
but it wasn’t. The Marquis was
somewhere in the back of the photo.
MAILING HELP
Mailing help on issue 308 was furnished

Elliott, Miriam Rodstein, Joan Gausted,
