name on the mailing label is that of the last issue on
your present subscription. We do not send notices
when subscriptions are about to expire. If you change
your address, please notify us immediately. Second
class mail is not usually forwarded. It is either returned
or destroyed. We subtract one issue from your subscription
for each returned copy. We keep expired
addresses on file for one year, so tell us if your
subscription is a renewal or completely new.

We’re still fighting the good fight, trying to get this
issue out before Christmas so you can put our cover
photo under your tree or bush, but it looks iffy. We’ll
probably have the issue in hand early enough, but I
don’t think we can get mailing help on Christmas
Eve unless we catch Santa and his reindeer. Happy
Holidays, anyway, from Locus to you.
We’re slowly – ever so slowly – mastering our
new printer. We’ve increased the type size and the
space between lines. The thinner letters still give us
about the same number of words per page. The
machine still has a tendency to stretch out some lines
and squeeze other lines in very tightly even when we
play with the hyphenation. We’re still on the
learning curve, but it should get easier with each
issue.
TOR
The proposed sale of Tor to St. Martin’s Press
may or may not be good for sf or, for that matter, for
Tor. After all, if the only difference is financial, Tor
Hard at work in the California winter
might be able to do even better. Unfortunately,
that’s just the intellectual side. On an emotional
level, I feel a sense of loss. Tom Doherty entered the
sf field just 10 years ago as publisher of Ace. He did
a great job rebuilding a dying company and turning
its image around. Five years ago, he did what most
people thought couldn’t be done – start a new,
successful general mass market publisher from
scratch. Tor’s success has been tied closely with the
spectacular growth of sf. Tom is certainly not the
only mover and shaker involved, but he has been
one of the leaders. Locus has grown along with Tor
both directly and indirectly. Tor has been our
biggest supporter through advertising (they’re
responsible for our ability to shift to color covers),
and Tom has been generous with advice and
information about publishing. I don’t think Locus
would be anywhere as good without his help. I’ve
come to think of Tom as the Man in Charge and Tor
as a flexible independent publisher. The outward
signs may not change if Tor is sold, but it will feel
different.
CORRECTIONS
We managed to get two photos wrong on last
issue’s People & Publishing page. The most
embarrassing was a photo of Jill Karla Schwartz
mislabeled as Bruce Chandler Fergusson. Bruce
Fergusson is male (see his photo on this month’s
People page). Jill Karla Schwartz is the cover artist
for Fergusson’s Arbor House novel. She was
showing it off at the World Fantasy Convention and
I misheard Dave Hartwell, who introduced us. I
thought she was the writer, not the artist. She must
have thought I was strange when I kept calling her
Bruce….On the same page, we misidentified Athos
Demetriou as Rolf Hamburger. Hamburger has
replaced Demetriou as foreign rights director of
