when subscriptions are about to expire. If you change
your address, please notify us immediately. Second
class mail is not usually forwarded. It is either returned
or destroyed. We subtract one issue from your subscription
for each returned copy. We keep expired

Once again, a plea for more space exploration. End

Welcome to the 19th anniversary issue of Locus.
Our 20th anniversary will come next year, during our
21st year of publication. Some of our readers don’t
seem to understand this.
This is a larger than usual issue, thanks to
increased advertising. We add an extra page of text
every time we get an extra ad, so it also contains
more text and pictures than usual. We seem to have
finally gotten the laser printing down pat – just in
time for Hewlitt Packard to announce a newer,
faster, cheaper machine. This is fairly standard in
the computer field. Our first 20-megabyte hard disk
cost 10 times the price of the recent one we bought,
and our second IBM computer was half the price of
the first one.
HELP WANTED HELP
Once again, Locus is looking for a new editorial
trainee. This is for a full-time job in Oakland,
California, which pays $5.00 per hour to start. We’re
certainly willing to talk to people from outside the
Bay Area, but we can’t pay for relocation, interviews,
etc. The main work involves backup for paste-up,
tracking down books over the phone, writing letters,
and generally doing all the jobs no one else wants to
do. We work out of my living room, so the
environment and job are both fairly unstructured.
You need to be able to type, drive a stick shift car,
and use a word processor/computer. Verbal and
office skills are a lot more important than journalism
skills to start. Possible writing assignments come
later. Send a resume plus a one-page personal letter
to Locus. Don’t send your reviews or newspaper
clippings.
CORRECTIONS
The Sorcerer’s Lady by Paula Volsky was not a
first novel and should be scratched from the First
Novel recommended list in the February issue. She
published The Curse of the Witch Queen (Del Rey)
in 1982.
The January issue had Providence celebrating its
300th year on the cover. It should have been the
350th anniversary.
Omni did 20 stories, not 18, last year.
The issue of Foundation described in the January
issue “Magazines Received” was issue 37, not 36.
The editor was Edward James, not David Pringle,
and the price was £2.95, not £2.40.
