All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.

Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.

This week's big debut is Carlos Ruiz Zafón's The Angel's Game (Doubleday), a new thriller by the author of The Shadow of the Wind (which Faren Miller just reviewed in the December '08 issue of Locus Magazine), debuts strongly on several lists this week, ranking #3 on fiction hardcover lists at New York Times and Washington Post.

Trends this week: all eight Sookie Stackhouse paperbacks by Charlaine Harris are back on the NYT mass market list; the trade paperback of Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife is back on several lists, perhaps in anticipation of the film's release on August 14th; and the trade paperback of Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind is back on three lists.
