The contest is sponsored by Baen Books and the National Space Society, and honors stories which explore the promise of space exploration. The winner receives an award, membership to the 2011 International Space Development Conference, a year’s membership to the National Space Society, as well as Baen books and National Space Society products.

All winning artwork will be included in Spectrum 18: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art (Underwood), edited by Cathy & Arnie Fenner. Winners will receive a Spectrum Award sculpted by Joseph DeVito, which rests on a base sculpted by Tom Banwell, with either a gold or silver engraved plate bearing the winner’s name. Jurors were Nathan Fox, Gregory Manchess, Shena Wolf, Jarrod Shifflett, Brandon Shiflett, Boris Vallejo, and Julie Bell. Story submissions, on the theme of “futures that never were”, should be a maximum of 350 words, including the title, and may not have been previously published. Entries must be submitted by November 19, 2010.

The winning entry will be printed in the year-end issue of New Scientist.
