Alan Lee to be 2013 World Fantasy Artist Guest of Honor

World Fantasy Con 2013 has named Alan Lee as the convention’s first artist guest of honor. Lee joins previously announced author guests of honor Richard Matheson and Richard Christian Matheson, and is best known for illustrating the 1,200 page centenary edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He’s contributed work to dozens of book covers over the years, worked extensively as a concept designer for films including Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and helped create the illustrated Faeries book with Brian Froud.

The convention will be held in Brighton, Sussex, October 31 – November 3, 2013. For more information, see www.wfc2013.org.

PulpFest Renames Award for Rusty Hevelin

In honor of fan Rusty Hevelin, the pulp magazine convention PulpFest is renaming its Munsey Award to the Rusty Hevelin Service Award (or Rusty, for short). Hevelin, who died December 27, 2011, was a major figure in pulp and science fiction fandom, and had been an active participant since the 1930s.

The award is given to a person who has worked towards “the improvement, elevation, and continuance of keeping the pulps alive and well for this generation and future generations.” Nominations for the First Annual Rusty Hevelin Service Award are now open, and the deadline for nominations ends April 30, 2012. Con or Bust Auction Open for Donations

The Con or Bust auction, to raise funds for people of color to attend the SF convention of their choice, is currently open for offers from people interested in donating items for auction, and is also accepting direct donations.

The auction will open for bidding February 11, 2012 at 12:01 a.m. EST and closes February 25, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The Con or Bust auction is in its third year of operation; the Carl Brandon Society took over the financial management of the auction after the first year. In 2011 $10,591.95 was raised, helping 16 people attend WisCon. This year, Con or Bust has expanded, allowing recipients to choose the SF convention they’d like to attend. WFC 2013 Guests of Honour Announced

The 2013 World Fantasy Convention has announced writers Richard Matheson and his son Richard Christian Matheson as the first author guests of honour for the convention, to be held October 31 – November 3, 2013 in Brighton, England.

TransAtlantic Fan Fund Announces 2011 Winner

The TransAtlantic Fan Fund (TAFF) announced Jacqueline Monahan as this year’s winner of the TAFF race to send a North American fan to Europe. Monahan, who beat out Warren Buff and Kim Kofmel in a three-way race, will attend Eastercon, to be held in Heathrow, London, April 6-9, 2012.

FantasyCon 2012 Announces First Guests

FantasyCon 2012 announced their first three guests for next year’s convention: Joe R. Lansdale (author GoH), Mary Danby (special editor guest), and Tim Lebbon (master of ceremonies). 2012 TAFF Ballot Now Open

The Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund has announced candidates for its 2012 TAFF Fund ballot. Winners will attend the 2012 EasterCon in London April 6-9, 2012, and will administer TAFF for two years.

The nominees are: Warren Buff (nominated by James Bacon, Paul Cornell, Chris Garcia, Tim Illingworth and Lloyd Penney), Kim G. Kofmel (nominated by Flick, Brad Foster, Jeanne Gomoll, Alice Lawson, and Pat Virzi/Mueller), and Jacqueline Monahan (nominated by Sandra Bond, Nic Farey, Steve Green, Curt Phillips and John Purcell).

Candidates had to submit a written platform of 101 words or less, and a pledge to travel to EasterCon if selected by fan vote. To download the ballot, or more information, see the TAFF website.

Dates Announced for 2012 C2E2 and WonderCon

The second Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo and twenty-fifth WonderCon have announced their dates and venues for 2012. Chicago’s C2E2 will be held April 13-15, 2012, in the North Hall of McCormick Place Convention Center. This will be a slight change of venue from the West Building of McCormick Place, where C2E2 was held last year. WonderCon will be held March 16-18, 2012, in Anaheim, California. This is a departure from their usual venue, San Francisco’s Moscone Center, which will be undergoing renovations.

Convention organizers, led by WonderCon director of marketing and public relations, David Glanzer, and C2E2 show manager, Lance Fensterman, worked together to find new dates and venues.

2013 Worldcon: LoneStarCon 3

LoneStarCon won their bid to host the 2013 World Science Fiction Convention in voting held at Renovation. The 71st Worldcon will be held August 29 – September 2, 2013 at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio TX. They received 694 of 760 votes cast.

Guests of Honor include Ellen Datlow, James Gunn, Norman Spinrad, Darrell K. Sweet, and Willie Siros, with Paul Cornell as toastmaster and Leslie Fish and Joe R. Lansdale as special guests.

The attending membership is $160.

Launch of the World SF Travel Fund

A group of genre professionals and fans both international and from the United States have joined together to found the World SF Travel Fund, an organization created to help one member of the science fiction, fantasy, and horror communities to travel internationally to attend a major genre event.

The fund has selected Charles Tan as its first recipient. Tan is an activist and blogger, known for his Bibliophile Stalker blog, as well as his contributions to the Nebula Awards blog, the Shirley Jackson Award blog, SF Signal and The World SF Blog. He has also edited two online anthologies of speculative fiction from the Philippines. The World SF Travel Fund award will allow him to travel from his home in the Philippines to attend the World Fantasy Convention 2011 in San Diego, California.

The Fund has set a fundraising goal of $6,000 through the Peerbackers Project website, which will enable it to run for two years.
