Science fiction and fantasy writer Jay Lake announced in a blog post yesterday that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

From his blog post: “the short form version is that I have a large mass in my peritoneum, two inches or more in size, along with another somewhat smaller mass. These are more omental tumors. Multiple masses of various sizes spread throughout my liver, some of them confirmed tumors, some of them suspected. Also two spots in my right lung which are suspected tumors. Tumors this widespread are not subject to surgical treatment. Not to mention which my liver is too fragile for further surgery in any case.”

He is going to start the drug Regorafenib later this month, which may arrest tumor growth enough to provide six to twelve months of life extension. After the Regorafenib treatment, he expects “about three months of decent quality of life, followed by six to nine months of decline, ending in death. In the mean time, of course, I will have to tolerate the rather substantial side effects of the drug.

“In other words, I will most likely die within nine to twenty-four months from now, depending on Regorafenib’s effectiveness. I will never again be out of treatment or free of cancer.”

Lake won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2004, and has been nominated for one Nebula Award, two Hugo Awards, three World Fantasy Awards, and 26 Locus Awards, as well as others. Lake has a story nominated for the Nebula, Locus, and Hugo this year, and plans on attending all three awards ceremonies, health permitting.

He has a long post with details of his diagnosis up at his blog, where he has been chronicling his struggle with cancer since 2008.

After recording his lines for a scene with Milhouse and Comic Book Guy in an episode of The Simpsons on April 4, Harlan Ellison was injured when he fell out of a chair in the Writers’ Enclave room, as reported on the Harlan Ellison Webderland. Harlan described it:

“Then one of the ancient, rickety old swivel chairs they use to furnish the Writers’ Enclave, in which I sat extolling, tipped me over with a crash, hurtling me assoverteakettle, onto the linoleum. Maximum fucking pain, everyone in panic.”

The fall was serious and painful enough that Ellison reported his recovery required a week of bed rest.

A petition is being circulated by the Philadelphia Weekly to place a historical marker in honor of late SF grandmaster Issac Asimov on the corner of 50th and Spruce, where he once lived: “Isaac Asimov. The late grand master of science fiction who authored 500 books across every Dewey Decimal category and invented the very idea of ‘robotics’ as a field of study, thus shaping the course of 20th- and 21st-century geekdom. He is generally thought of as a New Yorker—but he spent three very important years in Philadelphia.”

The petition was launched at an event on April 6th, when a group of Asimov’s fans gathered across the street from the apartment building where the author once lived. Local SF professionals Gardner Dozois, Michael Swanwick, Tom Purdom, Gregory Frost, and Victoria McManus were in attendance.

Iain Banks, Scottish SF and mainstream author, 59, has announced that he is “officially Very Poorly.” He has been diagnosed with late stage gall bladder cancer, and it is extremely unlikely that he will live beyond a year. He has withdrawn from all scheduled appearances and had asked his partner, Adele, if she would do the honor of “becoming my widow (sorry – but we find ghoulish humour helps).”

From his online statement: “I first thought something might be wrong when I developed a sore back in late January, but put this down to the fact I’d started writing at the beginning of the month and so was crouched over a keyboard all day. When it hadn’t gone away by mid-February, I went to my GP, who spotted that I had jaundice. Blood tests, an ultrasound scan and then a CT scan revealed the full extent of the grisly truth by the start of March…”

“I have cancer. It started in my gall bladder, has infected both lobes of my liver and probably also my pancreas and some lymph nodes, plus one tumour is massed around a group of major blood vessels in the same volume, effectively ruling out any chance of surgery to remove the tumours either in the short or long term.” He is still considering chemotherapy to give him more time, but has to wait for the jaundice to clear up regardless.

He and his new wife have married and are currently on a short honeymoon. He intends to spend “however much quality time I have left seeing friends and relations and visiting places that have meant a lot to us.” His publishers are working to bring the publication date of his forthcoming novel The Quarry earlier, to give him a better chance of “being around when it hits the shelves.”

Banks, who made his literary debut in 1984 with The Wasp Factory writes award-winning science fiction as Iain M Banks and bestselling, mainstream, literary fiction as Iain Banks.

His statement can be found on Banksophilia: Friends of Iain Banks, a site for friends, family, and readers to read news and leave him messages, and more details also at the BBC.

Two notable fundraising events have arisen as a result of science fiction author Jay Lake’s ongoing struggle with colon cancer, one to directly assist with medical funding and the other supporting a documentary about Lake.

An inventive fundraiser through youcaring.com is online, called “Sequence a Science Fiction Writer.” From the site: “a new technology is becoming available—one that may offer [Jay's] doctors a better option for treating the cancer. We’re trying to raise funds to allow Jay to have whole genome sequencing.”

Although the subject is a serious one, Lake’s typical humor shines through and many science fiction writers have volunteered to perform public acts of silliness if various stretch goals are met. Participating authors include Tobias S. Buckell, Mary Robinette Kowal, Jim C. Hines, Scott Lynch, Elizabeth Bear, Seanan McGuire, Paul Cornell, Cherie Priest, John Scalzi, Patrick Rothfuss, and Neil Gaiman.

Promised stunts range from Scott Lynch & Elizabeth Bear performing a sock puppet show of one of Lake’s short stories, to Cherie Priest presenting a steampunk/goth fashion show for pets, and culminate in Neil Gaiman’s promise to “perform a cover from the Magnetic Fields album 69 Love Songs whilst accompanying himself on the Ukulele” if the $20,000 goal is met.

Get more information and donate here: http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/Sequence-a-Science-Fiction-Writer/38705

The second fundraiser is in support of the documentary being filmed by Waterloo Productions, an independent production company based in Austin TX, about Lake’s struggle with cancer, entitled “Lakeside”. After Lake’s prognosis took a turn for the worse, the company began a Kickstarter campaign to “continue filming, bring in more crew, and fund the expanded post production.”
