Notes

Using the Index:

These pages are designed to give the feel of reading a book, as opposed to database programs that retrieve selected information. The starting point is the Table-of-Contents, which has links to the major sections of the index. Each page has links to the previous and next sequential pages in that section of the index, as well as links back to the Table-of-Contents. To speed page retrieval pages are limited to a length of about 30,000 characters.

To Find a Book or Story Author:
Any author is three clicks and a little scrolling away from the Table-of-Contents. It is not necessary to type in the author’s name. This click and scroll method also allows you to see the information that comes before and after your main point of interest.

Major Sections:

  1. From the Table-of-Contents click on Books or Stories, Listed by Author. This brings up a list of groups of authors, giving the first and last author in each group.

  2. Select the group that contains the author you want. This brings up a list of all authors in that group.

  3. Select an author to display a list of all books or stories by that author.

    • Books: For each author books are listed alphabetically in the following groups:

      books by the author,
      books edited by the author,
      books about the author.

Before each book title is a flag indicating the edition type of that book:

      * = first edition,
      + = first US edition,
      _ = reprint/reissue.

The book author list also includes links to stories by the author (also lists articles about the author and reviews of the author’s books), co-authors, pseudonyms, publisher summary, cover artist, and anthology/collection contents. In the book contents listing each story is followed by the original source of that story, if known, or by a "*" if the story is original to that book. In the Publisher Summary entries before 1984 are anthologies and single-author collections only.

    • Stories (including articles, poems, articles about the author, book reviews, etc.): For each author stories are listed alphabetically in the following groups:

      stories by the author,
stories adapted, edited or translated by the author,
articles about the author and book reviews.

After each story is a list of books and/or magazines containing that story. The original source of the story is on the same line as the story, reprints are listed on lines after the story. Selecting a source brings up the contents of that book or magazine. The author section also contains links to books by the author, co-authors and pseudonyms.

To Find an Issue of a Magazine:

Magazines, Listed by Title

  1. From the Table-of-Contents click on Magazines, Listed by Title. This brings up a list of groups of magazine titles.
  2. Select the group that contains the title you want. This brings up a list of all titles in that group.
  3. Select a title to display a list of all issues of that title.
  4. Select (Contents) for the desired issue.

From the issue, clicking on the magazine title brings up the list of issues for that title, author goes to that author’s list of stories, and cover artist goes to the chronological list of magazines with covers by that artist. Stories in each issue that are reprinted from other sources have the source listed if known, or "(r)" if not known.

To Find a Book or Story:
Books and stories are listed alphabetically under the story author. If the author is not known but the title is, the book or story title index will point to the author. The title index is accessed by the same process as the preceeding indexes:

  1. From the Table-of-Contents click on Books or Stories, Listed by Title. This brings up a list of groups of book or story titles, giving the first and last titles in each group.
  2. Select the group that contains the title you want. This brings up a list of all titles in that group.
  3. Select the author of the book or story to go to that author in the author list.

To Find a Cover Artist:
The cover artist index is accessed by the same process as the author index:

  1. From the Table-of-Contents click on Cover Artists. This brings up a list of groups of cover artists, giving the first and last artists in each group.
  2. Select the group that contains the artist you want. This brings up a list of all artists in that group.
  3. Select the artist to go to the chronological list of magazines with covers by that artist.

Chronological List
The (chron) link brings up a chronological listing of an author’s books and stories. This is a list by author and date of original publication of all books and stories that are covered by this index. Books and stories where only the year of publication is known are listed after those where the month is also known. Items where the date is not known are listed at the end of an author’s entry.

Series List
Series books and stories are indicated by a link of the form [*series_name]. This link brings up a chronological list by author of indexed books and stories in the series. A book or story may appear in more than one series.

Future Plans:

Each year an updated version of the index will be published on CD-ROM containing new entries for the previous year and any corrections to the index. There are also additional features we would like to add to the index: If there are any features you would like to see in the index please let us know.
