Screams: Three Novels of Terror Robert Bloch (Underwood-Miller 0-88733-079-7, Sep ’89 [Aug ’89], $39.95, 457pp, hc); Associational omnibus of three non-fantasy terror novels, The Will to Kill (Ace 1954), The Star Stalker (Pyramid 1968), and Firebug (Regency 1961). A signed, numbered limited edition of 300 copies (-080-0, $50.00) was announced but not seen.


The Brains of Rats Michael Blumlein (Scream/Press, Oct ’89, $20.00, 209pp, tp); Collection of 12 stories, including five originals, with an introduction by Michael McDowell. This is a special 200 copy “Prevue edition” published for the 1989 World Fantasy Convention. It has been laser printed and will not be the same as the final book, if it appears.


The Best of the Nebulas ed. Ben Bova (Tor 0-312-93184-0, Apr ’89, $19.95, 593pp, hc); Anthology of 21 Nebula winners voted “best” by SFWA members plus discussions of some of the winning novels plus a provocative introduction on awards and voting. Published simultaneously in trade paperback (0-312-93175-1, $14.95).


The Nemesis from Terra/Battle for the Stars ed. Anon. (Tor 0-812-55960-6, May ’89 [Apr ’89], $2.95, 107 & 141pp, pb); Anthology of two novels, The Nemesis from Terra (Ace 1961) and Battle for the Stars (Torquil 1961) printed back to back á la the old Ace doubles.


Spells of Wonder ed. Marion Zimmer Bradley (DAW 0-88677-367-9, Sep ’89 [Aug ’89], $3.95, 288pp, pb); Original anthology of 16 stories, with an introduction by Bradley.


Look Back on Laurel Hills Joseph Payne Brennan (Jwindz Publishing 0-9618918-2-3, Nov ’89, $8.00, 49pp, tp); Poetry collection by a well-known horror writer. A hardcover edition of 60 copies (-1-5, $30.00) was out of print on publication.

Writers of the Future Volume V ed. Algis Budrys (Bridge 0-88404-379-7, May ’89 [Apr ’89], $4.95, 427pp, pb); Original anthology of 14 stories from the 1988 Writers of the Future contest plus essays by various well known authors.


Borders of Infinity Lois McMaster Bujold (Baen 0-671-69841-9, Oct ’89 [Sep ’89], $3.95, 311pp, pb) [Miles Vorkosigan]; Comic sf “novel” that is actually three loosely connected, slightly rewritten novellas featuring the same character, Miles Vorkosigan, who is also the hero of most of Bujold’s other work. He’s appealing as usual (FCM).


Interzone William S. Burroughs (Viking 0-670-81347-8, Feb ’89, $17.95, 194pp, hc); Associational. Collection of stories and journal entries, edited by James Grauerholz. Some of the stories are surreal.


Xenogenesis Octavia E. Butler (SFBC #15462, Nov ’89, $9.98, 726pp, hc, cover by Pat Morrissey) [Xenogenesis]; Omnibus edition of the “Xenogenesis” trilogy, consisting of Dawn (Warner 1987), Adulthood Rites (Warner 1988), and Imago (Warner 1989). Highly recommended (CNB).


Patterns Pat Cadigan (Ursus 0-942681-07X, Sep ’89 [Aug ’89], $19.95, 207pp, hc); Collection of 14 stories, with an introduction by Bruce Sterling. Highly recommended (FCM).


The Black Reaper: Tales of Terror Bernard Capes (Equation 1-85336-121-6, Jul ’89, £3.50, 192pp, tp); Collection of ghost and horror stories, edited and introduced by Hugh Lamb.


The Folk of the Fringe Orson Scott Card (Phantasia Press 0-932096-49-2, Apr ’89, $22.00, 243pp, hc) [Carpenter]; Collection of five connected stories (including one original) set in a near future post-WWIII America among the Mormon survivors, plus an article on writing and an appreciation by fellow Mormon Michael Collings. Also available in a special signed boxed edition ($75.00) of 475 copies. The regular edition is limited to 3,000 copies.

These are presented in a “braided” format, with pieces of overlapping stories presented in chronological order.
