Some of the best short fiction around. Recommended - read the book and then subscribe to the magazine! (PSP)


The Garrett Files Glen Cook (SFBC 14378, Jan ’89, $8.98, 695pp, hc) [Garrett]; Omnibus of three fantasy detective novels: Sweet Silver Blues (1987), Bitter Gold Hearts (1988), and Cold Copper Tears (1989). All originally from NAL Signet.


Beyond the Looking Glass ed. Jonathan Cott (Viking Overlook Tusk 0-87951-238-5, May ’88, $9.95, 519pp, tp); Reprint (Stonehill 1973) anthology of ten Victorian fantasy tales and poems, with an introduction by Leslie Fiedler and an essay by the editor plus 200 black-and-white period illustrations. This edition has a 1987 date, was announced for 1988, and not seen until 1989. A hardcover edition (-995-9) was also offered but not seen.


Spirits of Christmas ed. Kathryn Cramer & David G. Hartwell (Wynwood 0-922066-16-7, Oct ’89 [Sep ’89], $18.95, 284pp, hc); Anthology of 20 Christmas ghost stories, seven of them originals.

The Sixth Omni Book of Science Fiction ed. Ellen Datlow (Zebra 0-8217-2606-4, Mar ’89 [Feb ’89], $4.50, 382pp, pb); Anthology of 16 stories; 15 of them appeared originally in Omni, and one, a novella by Michael Shea, is an original.


Demons and Dreams: The Best Fantasy and Horror 1 ed. Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling (Legend 0-7126-3420-7, Apr ’89 [Mar ’89], £6.95, 482pp, tp); Reprint (St. Martin’s 1988 as The Year’s Best Fantasy: First Annual Collection) anthology of 36 fantasy and horror stories plus write-ups on the year etc. This edition omits “The Moon’s Revenge” by Joan Aiken.
