The notes cover the differences in the various texts as well as explanations and references. A must for Tolkien fans. (CNB)


The Fellowship of the Ring J. R. R. Tolkien (Ballantine 0-345-33970-3, Sep ’88 [Aug ’88], $4.95, 527pp, pb) [Middle-Earth] Reissue (Allen & Unwin 1954, 1965) of Part One of “The Lord of the Rings”. The text is that of the 1965 revision. There is a terrible new cover by Michael Herring, although the copyright page still lists the artist as J.R.R. Tolkien. It also says “ninth printing July 1987” inside, which is nonsense. It’s probably closer to 100 printings. There are 8.3 million copies in print from Ballantine. (CNB)


The Fellowship of the Ring J. R. R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin 0-395-48931-8, Oct ’88, $16.95, 423pp, hc) [Middle-Earth] Reissue (Allen & Unwin 1954, 1965) fantasy novel, Book One of “The Lord of the Rings”. This edition is photo offset from the latest British hardcover and integrates corrections from other sources. The publisher calls this the “most near-to-perfect text” of “The Lord of the Rings” ever. This 20th printing also has a new jacket.

This edition integrates corrections from all sources. The publisher calls this the “most near-to-perfect text” of “The Lord of the Rings” ever. Same as the hardcover edition, except without the foldout map at the rear. Seventh printing.


The Hobbit J. R. R. Tolkien (Ballantine 0-345-33968-1, Sep ’88 [Aug ’88], $4.95, 304pp, pb) [Middle-Earth] Reissue (Allen & Unwin 1966) of the third revised edition of this children’s fantasy novel. The original was published by Allen & Unwin in 1937. This is the 50th anniversary edition of the 1938 Houghton Mifflin first American edition, with a hideous cover by Michael Herring. This is marked as the 23rd printing of the 1982 revised edition (?) and has the 1973 introduction by Peter Beagle. There are 14 million copies in print from Ballantine.


The Hobbit J. R. R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin 0-395-28265-9, Oct ’88 [Nov ’88], $7.95, 255pp, tp) [Middle-Earth] Reissue (Allen & Unwin 1937, 1951, 1966) new edition of the fantasy classic with the third edition text, illustrated by the author. The text conforms to the 1987 Allen & Unwin edition, incorporating all revisions and corrections. Fourth printing.


The Hobbit J. R. R. Tolkien (QPB, Nov ’88 [Oct ’88], $11.95, 317pp, tp) [Middle-Earth] This is a QPB reprint of the 1987 Houghton Mifflin 50th Anniversary hc edition, with a softcover and without the ISBN.


The Hobbit, or There and Back Again J. R. R. Tolkien (Easton Press, Jun ’88, $36.00 + $2.50 postage, 317pp, hc) [Middle-Earth] Reprint (Allen & Unwin 1937) classic juvenile fantasy novel, with illustrations by the author and a frontispiece by Michael Hague. The text is that of the second revised 1966 edition. Leather-bound, gilt-edge collector’s edition. This first appeared several years ago and is probably the same as the earlier Easton Press edition inside.
