The Complete Book of Swords Fred Saberhagen (SFBC #1457, Jan ’85 [Feb ’85], $7.50, 626pp, hc) [Swords]; Omnibus edition of a fantasy trilogy. It isn’t really complete, since Saberhagen signed a contract to write 6 more.


Berserker Base ed. Fred Saberhagen (Tor 0-812-55316-0, Mar ’85 [Feb ’85], $6.95, 316pp, pb) [Berserker]; Collection of stories by 7 authors, including connecting material by Saberhagen, originator of the “Berserker” series. Author credits appear only in the acknowledgements, not on the contents page, making it look like a novel.

Whispers V ed. Stuart David Schiff (Doubleday 0-385-18944-3, Feb ’85, $11.95, 208pp, hc); Anthology of 14 stories of horror/fantasy; most are originals.


Cuts Carter Scholz (Chris Drumm, Oct ’85, $6.00, 56pp, pb); Collection of ten new stories and one reprint. This is the limited edition version, 126 signed/numbered copies with a stiff cover and an inset Scholz checklist and poem. The regular edition price is $2.50. Drumm Booklet #20.


Great Ghost Stories ed. Betty Ann Schwartz (S&S/Little Simon 0-671-60179-2, 1985 [Dec ’85], $6.95, 177pp, hc); Anthology of 15 eerie tales, illustrated by Paul Geiger.


Tom O’Bedlam’s Night Out, and Other Strange Excursions Darrell Schweitzer (W. Paul Ganley 0-932445-14-4, Nov ’85, $7.50, 191pp, pb); Collection of 18 stories and a poem, with illustrations by Stephen E. Fabian. This has also been announced in hc for $20.00 and a “very limited” signed, numbered slipcased edition for $35; we have seen neither.


Liavek ed. Will Shetterly & Emma Bull (Ace 0-441-48180-9, Jul ’85 [Jun ’85], $2.95, 274pp, pb) [Liavek]; Original anthology set in the fantasy city Liavek. Another “Thieves’ World” clone. The background is more interesting than the essentially one-note stories, though the Wolfe does stand out. (FCM)


Moonsinger’s Friends ed. Susan M. Shwartz (Bluejay 0-312-94325-3, Jun ’85 [Jul ’85], $16.95, 342pp, hc); Original anthology of fantasy stories dedicated to Andre Norton.


Needle in a Timestack Robert Silverberg (Ace 0-441-56872-6, Nov ’85 [Oct ’85], $2.95, 180pp, pb); Reprint (Sphere 1979) collection, following the revised Sphere edition. The original version appeared from Ballantine in 1966, but about half the stories are different here. This is the first American edition of the revision.


The Silent Invaders Robert Silverberg (Tor 0-812-55460-4, Oct ’85 [Sep ’85], $2.95, 216pp, pb); Although the title only mentions The Silent Invaders (Ace 1963), this is actually an omnibus which also contains the 1957 novella “Valley Beyond Time” (not to be confused with the collection of the same name).

The Cosmic Perspective/Custer’s Last Stand Brian M. Stableford (Chris Drumm, Oct ’85, $5.00, 19+25pp, pb); Collection of two new stories printed back-to-back, Ace Double style.
