Tales of the South William Gilmore Simms (University of South Carolina Press 1-57003-086-3, Jul ’96, $49.95, 332pp, hc); Collection of 12 “fanciful” 19th-century stories about the American South, some supernatural and most with elements of folk tales. The introduction and postscript by Murray give a history of the story cycle, and lost stories. This is a much-revised edition of Hyperborea (Ballantine 1971) edited by Lin Carter, with additional fragments, re-orderings, and reconciliation of texts — enough to consider it a new book.
