Fantastic Tales: Visionary and Everyday ed. Italo Calvino (Random House/Pantheon 0-679-41526-2, Nov ’97 [Oct ’97], $30.00, 588pp, hc); Anthology of 26 stories of 19th-century fantastic literature, by authors as varied as Rudyard Kipling, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.G. Wells. Calvino divides the stories into two types, visionary and everyday, discussing this division in his introduction and prefatory notes to each story. Introduction, notes, and four stories are translated by Alfred MacAdam. Originally published in Italian in two volumes (Mondadori 1983 as Racconti Fantastici Dell’Ottocento: Volume Primo, Il Fantastico Visionario and Volume Secondo, Il Fantastico Quotidiano).
