Virtual History: Alternatives and Counterfactuals ed. Niall Ferguson (Papermac 0-333-64728-9, Mar ’98 [Feb ’98], £10.00, x+548pp, tp); Reprint (Picador 1997) associational speculative non-fiction anthology. Original essays from leading historians explore what would have happened if nine momentous events had turned out differently: no UK or US Civil War, German victory in Europe, no Cold War, etc. There is a long (90p) introduction, and an afterword that ties everything into one alternate history. The original Picador edition was not seen.


Shadows of Light and Dark Jo Fletcher (Airgedlámh Publications/The Alchemy Press 0-9532260-1-8, Sep ’98 [Oct ’98], £12.99, 52pp, hc, cover by Les Edwards); Associational collection of poetry, including much of the fantastic, from the noted writer and editor. Limited to 250 signed and numbered copies, signed by Fletcher, Les Edwards, Seamus A. Ryan, Michael Marshall Smith, and Neil Gaiman (who also contributes an introduction).
