Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury (Ballantine Del Rey 0-345-41001-7, 1997 [Oct ’97], $10.00, 179pp, tp) Reprint (Ballantine 1953) classic SF novel. This edition has the 1987 afterword and 1979 coda by Bradbury. The copyright page indicates that this edition was first published in 1996, but was not seen until now. Second printing.


The Golden Apples of the Sun and Other Stories Ray Bradbury (Avon 0-380-73039-1, Nov ’97 [Oct ’97], $10.00, 338pp, tp, cover by Tim O’Brien) Reprint (Bantam Spectra 1990 as Classic Stories 1) omnibus of The Golden Apples of the Sun (Doubleday 1953) and R is For Rocket (Doubleday 1962). Contains 32 stories, omitting three from The Golden Apples of the Sun. This follows the contents of the third printing (1995) which restored the title story “The Golden Apples of the Sun” omitted from the 1990 edition.

The Martian Chronicles Ray Bradbury (Avon 0-380-97383-9, Feb ’97 [Jan ’97], $15.00, 268pp, hc, cover by Tim O’Brien) Reprint (Doubleday 1950) classic collection of connected stories. There is a new introduction by Bradbury, and some of the stories have been “updated and revised”; the dates of the stories have been pushed back 31 years. It includes “The Wilderness” from the 1973 Doubleday edition, and drops “Way in the Middle of the Air”. First in a new series of low-priced hardcover editions of Bradbury’s works.

The Gratitude of Kings Marion Zimmer Bradley & Elisabeth Waters (SFBC #18196, Nov ’97 [Oct ’97], $2.98, 110pp, hc, cover by Pat Morrissey) [Lythande] Fantasy novella featuring the minstrel/magician Lythande. Simultaneous with the Roc gift edition, but packaged differently, in standard-size format, with new cover art and interior illustrations by Keith Minnion. The Roc edition lists Elizabeth Waters as co-holder of the copyright, but she is not listed in this edition. This is supposedly similar to the 1997 Wildside Press limited edition (1-56865-579-7), not seen. The price is a special for book club members, available with any purchase. This edition lacks a price and ISBN, and has the SFBC number on the back jacket.
