SFFH on Bestseller Lists: 19 November 2000

As predicted, Robert Jordan's Winter's Heart (Tor) has debuted strongly, showing up on five lists this week, at #1 on four of them. Since some lists have one-week lags and others two, look for the book on more lists next week.

George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords, which debuted strongly last week, enters Amazon.com's list this week, and slips a bit on other lists.

Terry Pratchett's The Truth remains #1 on the Times of London list, and debuts at #35 (the last runner-up) on the New York Times list.

In a strange anomaly, Dan Simmons's Darwin's Blade places on the Los Angeles Times's list for a third week in a row, rising this week to #4, though it hasn't cracked any other list at all.

Caleb Carr's Killing Time has debuted on three lists, while Francesca Lia Block's collection of retold fairy tales The Rose and the Beast appears at #15 on the LAT list.

PW updates its children's lists for November, with Philip Pullman entering the fiction list at #1.

Earlier volumes of fantasy series by George R.R. Martin and Philip Pullman are selling well at Amazon as coattail effects of the release of the series' latest volumes in hardcover.

Note there is no San Francisco Chronicle list this week.

The table compiles SFFH books placing 15th or higher on general bestseller lists (30th or higher on the combined USA Today list). The current rank of each book and the change since last week are shown, where:
   = same as last week
   + or - with number: difference since last week
   + back on list
   ++ new on list
   x no longer on list (number of x's: weeks off list)
   () below cut-off but noted anyway
   -- previously noted anyway but now nowhere in sight
   nyp Not-yet-published (pre-ordered)

Columns show ranks on lists from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, BookSense, Amazon.com (fiction lists), and Amazon UK (fiction lists). All lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate general [nonfiction] lists (gen), children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.
