J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix dominates lists, appearing on all but 2 of those charted below. Though relegated to children's lists at New York Times and BookSense, it leads the hardcover fiction list in San Francisco, and leads all lists that rank sales regardless of format or genre, e.g. those by USA Today and Amazon.
New on 3 lists: a literary novel by Alice Hoffman, The Probable Future, about witchcraft in New England.
Changes to this page-- columns for Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal have been dropped, to make room for data from Australia, from online bookseller Dymocks, and Canada, from Amazon.ca. Dymocks posts several top-10 genre lists; we're checking those for fiction, literature, children's, and nonfiction books (but not the one for SF, since the point of this chart is to show how genre books rank among all books). For both Amazon and Amazon.ca, the top 50 of their hourly-updated Top 100 lists are compiled. This marks a change for the Amazon column, which previously compiled four separate fiction/nonfiction hardcover/paperback lists; those lists have not been updated in over a month.
Note that editions sold in Canada and Australia in most cases correspond to UK or US editions; links on the titles in the left column go to Amazon (US), Amazon.uk, or Amazon.ca accordingly (there's one Australian-specific title with no link).

Dates shown are posted dates, except those in parentheses, which are dates compiled. New York Times posts its list one week in advance of print publication.
Note that some sources do not compile paperback bestsellers, and some exclude YA books (like the Harry Potter series) from their hardcover and paperback fiction lists.
