The Belt of Gold Cecelia Holland (Knopf 0-394-52791-7, Apr ’84 [Mar ’84], $15.95, 305pp, hc) Non-sf, associational author. Holland’s historical novels have a great influence on many sf and fantasy writers. This strong, exciting study of Byzantium’s interweaving of political infighting, chariot racing, and religion shows why: The past is both alien and alive here, and no imagined world could be more absorbingly exotic.
