SF/F/H on General Bestseller Lists
4 January 2000

The Harry Potter books and Crichton's Timeline continue their domination of the general bestseller lists, while Stephen King's Hearts of Atlantis remains strong on a few lists. William Gibson's All Tomorrow's Parties has dropped off the San Francisco list. Herbert & Anderson's Dune: House Atreides reappeared on a couple lists, perhaps due to holiday sales. Thomas Harris's Hannibal continues to sell well in Britain, where Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are the highest ranking genre titles on the lists.

The table compiles SF/F/H bestsellers placing 15th or higher on general lists available online, from, respectively, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, London Times, Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com, BookSense, Amazon.co.uk, and Barnesandnoble.com.

All the general lists rank hardcovers and paperbacks separately, except for (*) the USA Today list, which is a single list combining fiction and nonfiction in all formats. Some books are on separate children's lists (ch), trade paperback lists (tpb), or mass market paperback lists (mm), as indicated.

The SF-genre lists (last three columns) rank hardcovers and paperbacks together. These lists are undated, but were compiled on January 3rd. Only the top 10 titles (of 25) are compiled from Amazon's list.
