John Collier and Fredric Brown Went Quarrelling Through My Head Jessica Amanda Salmonson (W. A hardcover edition (-36-5, $22.50) and a deluxe signed edition (-37-3, $37.50) were announced but not seen.


Tales by Moonlight II ed. Jessica Amanda Salmonson (Tor 0-812-55371-3, Jul ’89 [Jun ’89], $3.95, 306pp, pb); Anthology of 37 horror stories from small press publications, plus an introduction by Salmonson, a piece on starting small press horror magazines by Peggy Nadramia, and a listing of those currently available.


What Did Miss Darrington See?: An Anthology of Feminist Supernatural Fiction ed. Jessica Amanda Salmonson (Feminist Press 1-55861-006-5, Jul ’89 [Jun ’89], $10.95, 263pp, tp); Anthology of 24 stories of the supernatural by women writers, poems plus a long introduction by Rosemary Jackson and a recommended reading list by Salmonson. Many of the stories are relatively obscure and of high quality. Recommended (SW). Also announced in cloth (-005-7 $29.95)


Jane Saint and the Backlash: The Further Travails of Jane Saint and The Consciousness Machine Josephine Saxton (The Women’s Press 0-7043-4189-1, Sep ’89, £4.95, 167pp, tp, cover by Colin Saxton) [Jane Saint]; Collection of an original short novel and a revised novelette.


Unknown Worlds: Tales from Beyond ed. Stanley Schmidt & Martin H. Greenberg (Galahad Books 0-88365-728-7, 1988 [Jun ’89], $9.98, 517pp, hc); Anthology of 25 stories originally published in Unknown Worlds. An instant remainder book, this has a 1988 copyright date but was not seen until 1989.


The Landing: A Night of Birds Katherine Scholes (Doubleday 0-385-26191-8, Oct ’89 [Sep ’89], $12.95, 65pp, hc); Australian young-adult fantasy novella about a little girl taken into the private world of birds, illustrated by David Wong. First American edition (Hill of Content 1987).


Seeing Red David J. Schow (Tor 0-812-50019-9, Jan ’90, $4.95, 268pp, pb, cover by Thomas Canty); Collection of 14 horror stories. Previously published stories have been revised for this collection.


Another Round at the Spaceport Bar ed. George H. Scithers & Darrell Schweitzer (Avon 0-380-75650-1, Apr ’89 [Mar ’89], $3.50, 248pp, pb); Anthology of eighteen sf barroom stories, second in a series.


The Enigmatic Eye Moacyr Scliar (Ballantine 0-345-35969-0, Mar ’89 [Feb ’89], $5.95, 100pp, tp); Collection of literary magic realism stories. Translated by Eloah F. Giacomelli from the Portuguese. Originally published as O Olho Enigmatico (Editora Guanabara 1986).

Stinker from Space Pamela F. Service (Fawcett Juniper 0-449-70330-4, May ’89 [Apr ’89], $2.95, 84pp, pb) [Stinker]; Reprint (Scribner’s 1988) Young-adult sf novella about an alien in the body of a skunk.


Dark Night in Toyland Bob Shaw (Gollancz 0-575-04448-9, Mar ’89, £11.95, 190pp, hc); Very enjoyable collection of fifteen sf stories, one of which appears to be original and all of which are previously uncollected in the UK (although two appeared in a US collection). Recommended. (PSP)


Proteus Manifest Charles Sheffield (SFBC #15032, Jul ’89 [Oct ’89], $6.98, 406pp, hc) [Behrooz Wolf]; Omnibus of Sight of Proteus (Ace 1978) and Proteus Unbound (NEL 1989).


The Father of Stones Lucius Shepard (Washington Science Fiction Association 0-9621725-0-2, Jun ’89, no price, 133pp, hc) [Griaule]; Fantasy novella set in the same world as “The Man Who Painted the Dragon Griaule” and “The Scalehunter’s Beautiful Daughter”, with illustrations by J.K. Potter. Signed, limited edition of 500 copies published for Disclave ’89. There is a 1988 copyright, but this seems to be the first appearance.


The Jaguar Hunter Lucius Shepard (Bantam 0-553-34695-4, May ’89 [Apr ’89], $7.95, 356pp, tp); Abridged reprint (Arkham House 1987) collection of ten stories. (Lacks “R&R”).


Nantucket Slayrides Lucius Shepard & Robert Frazier (Eel Grass Press 0-938075-10-1, Aug ’89 [Oct ’89], $10.95, 219pp, tp); Anthology of three fantasy/horror stories set in Nantucket, two reprints by Shepard, one original by Frazier. Also announced in a signed, limited hardcover edition of 250 copies (-11-X, $70.00).
