The Centaur in the Garden Moacyr Scliar (Ballantine Available Press 0-345-31669-X, May ’85 [Apr ’85], $5.95, 215pp, pb) The first English-language edition (translated by Margaret A. Neves) of O Centauro No Jardin (Editoria Nova Fronteira S.A. 1980). Fantasy novel about a Brazilian Jewish centaur. As the hero gradually leaves centaur-hood behind him, it becomes more and more mainstream. The New York Times review aptly labeled it “Yuppies with fetlocks.” Offbeat, but pretty lightweight. (FCM)
