Locus Internships

The Locus Science Fiction Foundation offers part-time unpaid internships to enthusiastic science fiction readers in conjunction with Locus, the leading monthly trade journal covering science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Tasks for the LSFF may include grant research, grant proposal writing, archival work and cataloging, data entry, etc. Tasks for Locus magazine may include running errands (must be comfortable driving a minivan), general office work (mailing, filing, faxing), customer service, and occasional proofreading. While working for the magazine you will become familiar with all aspects of its publication, including photo colorbalancing, page layout, and small-business administration. The position is well suited to a recent graduate or current college student interested in journalism, literature, or SF research.

Requirements:

Driver's license and good driving record

Good phone manner

Ability to follow through with tasks under stress

Basic knowledge of Word and Excel

Attention to detail

Familiarity with the science fiction genre

Photoshop, Quickbooks, and InDesign skills a plus

We support diversity! We encourage people of color, women, people with disabilities, older people, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people to apply. We welcome people of any gender identity or expression, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, age, size, nationality, religion, culture, education level, and self-identification.

To apply, please email a resume and a cover letter describing your interest in science fiction to locus@locusmag.com.

Resumes without cover letters will not be considered. We will negotiate college credit through Peralta, SFSU, or other universities if programs are willing. This is an unpaid, volunteer position for a non-profit organization; current regulations about unpaid internships can be found here -- please note that labor regulations pertain to “for profit” organizations only. Time offered to nonprofits is understood to be volunteered without compensation. Hard work will be rewarded with insider knowledge and occasional chocolate. Job location is in San Leandro, California; we strongly prefer local applicants who have their own transportation.
